Greetings

Welcome to the February newsletter from River Heights Physiotherapy.

DRY NEEDLING - Is it for you?

River Heights Physiotherapy offers a type of dry needling called Mini Ren Acupuncture (MRA). It is a dry needling technique that targets muscle and fascia tension and scar tissue adhesions. It is a very effective, minimally invasive therapy to treat all types of soft tissue pain, nerve compressions and stiffness. It can have an effect anywhere in the body where you experience pain or tension, and is often effective when other muscle and fascia release techniques have not been.  When stiffness is present, an immediate increase in mobility is usually seen.

MRA involves inserting a thin needle into specific points, usually 3-5 repetitions per targeted point. In MRA the needle depth is not as deep as other types of dry needling (less than 1 cm), making it safer and less painful.  Each session lasts only 5-15 minutes and may be used in conjunction with other therapies used by your physiotherapist or acupuncturist.  Treatment frequency varies from once every 3 days to weekly.  The general course can be 1-5 sessions.

Call River Heights Physiotherapy for more information if you feel this type of therapy would be something you would like to try.  The following therapists are trained in MRA. MRA is billed as a physiotherapy session with acupuncture or as an acupuncture session depending on which therapist you see.

Exercise Is Medicine

Have you ever heard the phrase “exercise is the best medicine?” Regular exercise helps people remain limber, boosts physical health, enhances mental performance and resilience, and improves longevity. It also reduces the risk of certain age-related issues.

When you are not able to access a fitness center, it’s great to know that you can still exercise as much as you wish at home.

Cross country skiing

Cross country skiing is a fast-paced outdoor sport that provides a full-body workout. Although the risk of getting injured during this activity is relatively low, it can still happen.

Selecting the right equipment, stretching before skiing, and proper body positioning can help prevent unnecessary injuries such as muscle strain and overuse, knee sprains, or a dislocated shoulder.

Understanding Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles tendonitis is a common issue, especially for individuals who run regularly. This injury develops when tendons in the lower leg region near the ankle become inflamed.

A damaged Achilles tendon has a higher risk of rupturing, even with activities of daily living, which means it needs to be addressed in a timely manner.
